Overview

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. This procedure aims to create a smoother, firmer abdominal profile, often sought after significant weight loss, pregnancy, or when natural ageing has left the stomach area saggy or protruding

Benefits

Abdominoplasty is suitable for men and women who are in good general health and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the surgery. Ideal candidates typically include:

  • Individuals with loose or sagging abdominal skin

  • Those with weakened or separated abdominal muscles

  • People who have excess fat concentrated in the abdomen that is resistant to diet and exercise

  • Women who have had multiple pregnancies

  • Individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, resulting in loose, sagging skin around the abdomen

Types of Abdominoplasty

  • Full Abdominoplasty: This comprehensive procedure involves making a horizontal incision between the hip bones, through which excess skin is removed, muscles are tightened, and the belly button is repositioned.

  • Mini Abdominoplasty: Also known as a partial tummy tuck, this is suitable for individuals with fat deposits and loose skin located below the navel. The procedure involves a shorter incision and does not require repositioning of the belly button.

  • Extended Abdominoplasty: This variation includes the removal of 'love handles' on either side of the waist as well as the upper thigh. It is ideal for those who have experienced significant weight loss and have a considerable amount of excess skin.

  • Fleur-de-Lys Abdominoplasty: This technique is particularly effective for those with significant skin laxity, both horizontally and vertically. It involves a vertical and a horizontal incision, forming a fleur-de-lys shape. This allows for more extensive removal of excess skin and is often chosen by patients who have undergone massive weight loss.

  • Abdominoplasty with Liposuction: Combining liposuction with a tummy tuck can enhance body contouring results. Liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits while the abdominoplasty addresses skin and muscle laxity. This dual approach provides a more sculpted and toned abdominal area.

  • Lock and Glue Abdominoplasty: This innovative technique involves the use of special tissue glue to seal the surgical area internally, reducing the need for drains post-surgery. It promotes quicker recovery, less discomfort, and reduced risk of complications.

  • Quilting Sutures: This technique involves the use of internal sutures to attach the skin to the underlying tissue, reducing the need for drains and improving the tightness and smoothness of the abdominal contour. Quilting sutures help to minimise fluid accumulation and enhance recovery.

The Procedure

1. Anaesthesia: Administering medication to ensure you are asleep and pain-free during the procedure.

2.Incision: Making the necessary incisions based on the type of abdominoplasty being performed.

3. Repair and Reshape: Tightening of the abdominal muscles (plication) and removal of excess fat and skin.

4. Liposuction (if included): Removing additional fat deposits to enhance contouring.

5. Quilting Sutures (if used): Applying internal sutures to attach the skin to the underlying tissue, reducing fluid accumulation.

6. Lock and Glue Technique (if used): Applying tissue glue to minimise the need for drains.

7. Closing the Incisions: Suturing the skin together to create a new, smoother contour.

Recovery

Post-surgery, you can expect some swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. You will need to wear a compression garment to support your abdomen as it heals and to minimise swelling. Full recovery may take several weeks, during which time you should avoid strenuous activities and follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions carefully.

  • First Few Days: Limited mobility; assistance may be needed.

  • First Few Weeks: Gradual return to normal activities; light exercise can begin.

  • 6 to 8 Weeks: Most swelling and bruising should subside; more vigorous activities can resume.
